60 4G Mobile Towers to be Built in Zambia’s Rural Areas for Better Connectivity

The Zambian government is set to enhance internet connectivity in rural areas by constructing 60 new 4G mobile towers.

This initiative follows the recent unveiling of plans to establish digital centers that offer free internet access to citizens. The plans for Community Digital Transformation Centres are aimed at improving Zambia’s digital ecosystem.

Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, emphasized the government’s commitment to rural connectivity, particularly in the Mushindamo district of North Western Province, where a new 4G network tower was recently commissioned by MTN Zambia.

Mutati disclosed plans to erect and upgrade mobile network towers in North Western Province, with 19 new towers designated for the Northwest province alone. The goal is to enhance voice and data networks and convert all existing 2G connectivity to 4G. The minister stressed the importance of partnerships with private sectors like MTN Zambia, which has pledged to upgrade 50 of its network towers from 2G and 3G to 4G.

Acknowledging the Mushindamo district’s limited mobile network connectivity, Mutati assured that development efforts would extend to other areas. MTN Zambia’s CEO, Abbad Reda, highlighted the company’s contribution, with 110 rural sites deployed and 18 universal sites upgraded from 2G to 3G technology.

Zambia’s recent announcements about Community Digital Transformation Centres and the distribution of Starlink kits to parliament members are commendable as these moves will expand internet reach.
