Ivan Toney Opens Up About Return from FA Betting Ban

As Ivan Toney gears up for his much-anticipated return to the pitch after an eight-month ban for violating FA betting regulations, the Brentford striker candidly revealed the emotional turmoil and the determination to make amends for lost time.

“I’m going to be hungrier, I’m in better shape now,” he said.

“There has been some time out, but what drives me is when people say: ‘he’s not going to be the same to where he left off’. So watch this space and see what happens.”

Toney’s ban, comprising 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules, left him disenchanted with football, a sentiment he admitted during an extensive interview with Sky Sports.

With his suspension concluding on January 17, the Premier League will witness his comeback against Nottingham Forest on January 20.

Addressing speculation regarding his future at Brentford, Toney expressed his deep gratitude for the club’s unwavering support during his ban.

He pledged to repay their faith by contributing to lifting the team out of the relegation struggle in the latter part of the season.

The forward’s England aspirations took a hit following his ban, notably missing out on potential international appearances after earning his debut cap under Gareth Southgate’s tutelage.

With the Euro 2024 on the horizon, Toney is resolute about reclaiming his form and securing a place among England’s striking options.

When questioned about his Euro 2024 ambitions, Toney affirmed, “That’s the aim. That’s the goal, to try and get back to my form and be involved in that.”

He acknowledged the competition among top strikers vying for a place in the national team but emphasized his determination to earn a spot through hard work and performance.

Reflecting on watching the Qatar World Cup from the sidelines, Toney admitted the difficulty of witnessing the tournament while knowing he could have been a part of it.

“But what’s done is done, I can’t change anything,” he remarked.
