As reported earlier, President Bola Tinubu has initiated a sweeping overhaul of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) following revelations of alleged fraudulent transactions amounting to over N1.2 billion over the past two years.

This overhaul comes amidst the approval of the indefinite suspension of the agency’s top officials and the immediate appointment of new executive directors, such as Umar Abdullahi Umar, as the Executive Director of Technical Services at REA. Umar Abdullahi Umar is the son of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The restructuring effort also saw the appointment of Aliyu Abubakar as Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad’s replacement. Ayoade Gboyega was named the Executive Director of Corporate Services, and Doris Uboh was named the Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF).

Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu’s spokesperson, emphasised the situation’s seriousness, stating, “President Tinubu expects all appointees in his administration to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties.”

Ngelale confirmed that anti-graft agencies have launched investigations into the alleged misappropriation of funds and are working to recover the embezzled funds.
