Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will address the United States Congress on July 24 to discuss the war against Hamas in Gaza, Republican leaders announced on Thursday.

Netanyahu will speak to a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate. U.S. House Speaker, Mike Johnson, and Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, confirmed the invitation.

“I am very moved to have the privilege of representing Israel before both Houses of Congress and to present the truth about our just war against those who seek to destroy us to the representatives of the American people and the entire world,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Netanyahu’s visit comes amid strained relations with U.S. President, Joe Biden, who has supported Israel’s campaign in Gaza but has recently criticised some of its tactics and withheld certain military supplies. It is unclear if Netanyahu will meet with Biden during his visit.

Biden’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict has been controversial ahead of the upcoming elections. Some Democrats and voters are upset about the high civilian death toll in Gaza, while Republicans argue Biden is not doing enough to support Israel.

Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, who co-issued the invitation to Netanyahu, acknowledged his disagreements with the Israeli Prime Minister but stressed the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship.

“But because America’s relationship with Israel is ironclad and transcends one person or prime minister, I joined the request for him to speak,” Schumer said.
