The Federal Government has handed over 24,180 bags of maize and 5,828 bags of garri to the Akwa Ibom State Government for distribution to households.

The presentation took place in Uyo, where Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), was represented by Mmandu Aisueni. The NEMA stated that the food relief effort followed the federal government’s approval of 42,000 metric tonnes of food items from the National Strategic Reserve to aid struggling Nigerians.

Local government committees will oversee the distribution, including members from the State Emergency Management Agency and traditional institutions. In addition, 20 per cent of the food for each council area will be allocated to religious groups and 3 per cent to boarding schools.

This donation, like others, came as  a temporary fix that does not address the underlying problem that has led to the country’s food scarcity and hunger crisis. In a related development, the government donated bags of rice to flood victims in Maiduguri, instead of addressing the infrastructural flaw that triggered the floodings.
