The Kano State Police Command has warned residents against engaging in protests on October 1, the day of Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration.

The warning came as the Command paraded 89 suspects arrested for various crimes, including kidnapping, human trafficking, armed robbery, drug dealing, and forgery, during a press briefing at its headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

Speaking to journalists, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, emphasised that the police are prepared to deal decisively with anyone who violates the order.

The statement comes in response to rumours of a planned nationwide protest on October 1, following recent unrest during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in the state.

Haruna assured Kano residents that the police had completed comprehensive security preparations for the upcoming Independence Day event, stating that security forces have been deployed strategically to prevent potential security threats.

On the forthcoming Independence Day celebration, the Police Command has concluded all necessary arrangements to provide adequate security during and after the event period. I urge all Kano State residents to cooperate with the Police, adhere to safety guidelines, and respect the rights of others, Haruna said.

On the paraded suspects, Haruna revealed that the arrests were made between September 12 and the present day at various locations across the state. Of the 89 suspects, 53 have been charged to court, while 36 remain under investigation.

Recall that following the #EndBadGovernance protests, Kano State Police Command announced that it arrested 873 suspects for various criminal offences. Among those arrested, 600 were involved in riots, and 76 were detained for displaying Russian flags during the August 1st nationwide protests in the state.
