Nigeria Has Reforms To Undertake Before Joining BRICS, It Will ‘At the Right Time’ - Foreign Minister

Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, has revealed that Nigeria has shown interest to become a member of BRICS, an intergovernmental organisation with shared economic interests comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Tuggar disclosed this during an interview with ChannelsTV on Sunday, stating, “Joining BRICS is on the radar of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.”

He noted, however, that “Nigeria has many reforms to undertake before it can apply to join the bloc.

“Tinubu was in China recently, and before that, [Nigeria’s] Vice President Kashim Shettima visited China, and in all our meetings, we made it clear that we are interested in joining BRICS at the right time,” Tuggar stressed.

However, Nigeria is yet to formally apply to join in the bloc, which is considered part of a plan to forge, reshape global dominance and achieve a de-dollarization goal aimed at boosting the economy of member countries with less reliance on the U.S. dollar.

“We’ll join when the time is right. We never said we were not joining BRICS. It is about timing. We have already indicated our interest in joining but have not formally written it,” the Foreign Minister stated.

Meanwhile, the next summit is slated for October 22-24 in Russia’s Kazan city.
