The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has condemned Nigeria’s decision to withdraw from their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier scheduled for October 15, threatening legal action to protect the interests of its national team.

Recall that Nigeria’s Super Eagles pulled out their second leg match with Libya after being stranded at Libya’s Al Abaq Airport for over 15 hours without basic amenities.

Citing safety concerns, Nigeria refused to proceed with the match.

In a statement by The Libya Observer, the LFF accused the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) of mishandling the match arrangements and causing the confusion that led to the airport ordeal.

The LFF also claimed that Nigeria failed to cooperate during both the first and second legs of the qualifiers, contrasting the Nigerians’ decision with Libya’s perseverance during the first leg played in Nigeria.

The Libyan Football Federation condemns the Nigerian Football Federation for refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match, the LFF said, adding that it would “take all legal measures to preserve the interests of its team.

Yesterday photos of the stranded Super Eagles sleeping on benches went viral, ater being shared by the captain William Troost-Ekong.

Troost-Ekong labelled the situation “disgraceful,” accusing Libyan officials of deliberately playing “mind games.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) later expressed concern and said it had launched an investigation into the incident. CAF’s Disciplinary Board is now engaging both Libyan and Nigerian authorities over the matter.

However, LFF apologised to Libyan football fans for the confusion and shared training photos from Benghazi’s Martyrs of Benina Stadium, insisting there was “no room for excuses”.
