Kenyan Impeached VP Holds Ruto Responsible For His Safety After Withdrawal of Security Detail

Impeached Vice President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that his security detail has been withdrawn and accused President William Ruto of bearing responsibility for his safety.

Gachagua made the statement on Sunday, asserting that his life is at risk following his impeachment on Thursday.

Addressing reporters, Gachagua, who has denied the charges brought against him, expressed his dismay at what he described as a betrayal by President Ruto, whom he supported during the 2022 presidential election.

It is the most unfortunate thing that has ever happened in this country that you can be so mean to a man who helped you become president, Gachagua said.

The former deputy president is appealing his dismissal, stating that he does not consider his impeachment final.

He was impeached on five of 11 charges, including violation of the Constitution and incitement of ethnic hatred, in a motion backed by both opposition MPs and allies of Ruto. Gachagua has rejected all accusations.

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango is yet to comment immediately on Gachagua’s claim regarding the withdrawal of his security, promising to make inquiries.

The Kenyan Parliament has approved Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as Gachagua’s replacement. However, a court ruling has suspended Kindiki’s swearing-in pending legal challenges from Gachagua and other parties.

President Ruto, who has had a falling out with Gachagua in recent months, has remained silent on the impeachment process.

In a speech on Sunday, marking the national day, Ruto called for unity, urging Kenyans to reject tribalism and exclusion.
