Kaduna Governor Sani Welcomes ‘Repentant’ Bandits Amidst Heightened Insecurity

324

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani on Thursday, in Birnin Gwari received some repentant bandits as part of his administration’s effort to rehabilitating repentant bandits in the state.

Speaking at a high-security event in Birnin Gwari, the governor formally reopened the town’s cattle market, which had been shut for over a decade due to insecurity, and reintegrated the repentant bandits into the community.

The governor noted that this was part of his administration’s resolve to provide second chances to individuals who abandon violence and also promised strict action against those who refuse to lay down their arms.

Governor Sani acknowledged the efforts of the Peace Dialogue Group in resolving long-standing conflicts and highlighted the state’s work on a comprehensive framework for lasting peace.

However, the reopening of the cattle market and reintegration program occurred against the backdrop of increasing insecurity in other parts of the state.

Barely days before the event, bandits attacked Ungwan Babangida village in Kauru Local Government Area, abducting 15 individuals, including the village head, Babangida Sojiji.

According to Aminu Khalid, a youth leader from nearby Dokan Karji, the attackers stormed the village at midnight armed with sophisticated weapons, seizing their victims after an assault that left the community shaken.

Among the abducted are three women and nine men, including our leader,” Khalid said, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to combat banditry.

He commended local vigilantes for their proactive measures, but the youth leader warned that the scale of violence continues to overwhelm communities.

The attack followed another incident in Libere community, also in Kauru Local Government Area, where four farmers were kidnapped just 48 hours earlier.

Governor Sani’s rehabilitation and reintegration initiative has drawn mixed reactions. While some commend the approach as a practical means of reducing violence, others question its effectiveness in the face of persistent attacks.

However, the governor maintained that his administration would balance fairness with firm action, ensuring that only those who genuinely renounce violence benefit from government support.
