Human rights lawyer and social critic Dele Farotimi has been remanded in prison custody following his arrest and subsequent prosecution by the Nigerian Police.

Farotimi’s arrest, which has drawn widespread criticism, was confirmed on Wednesday by his assistant, Feyisayo Olatunde.

According to Omoyele Sowore, Farotimi was hurriedly prosecuted in an Ado Ekiti court, where he was denied bail and ordered to remain in custody until December 10, 2024, when the case will be heard.

Sowore described the Nigerian justice system as “whack” and accused influential figures, including prominent lawyer Afe Babalola, of orchestrating the arrest and remand.

The Nigerian justice system is whack. As expected, Dele Farotimi has been hurriedly prosecuted and sent to prison after being denied bail by a judge in Ado Ekiti pre-arranged to do the same, Sowore stated on his X page.

Farotimi’s assistant, Feyisayo Olatunde, disclosed that unknown individuals arrested the human rights lawyer on Tuesday morning.

The arrest followed a warning Farotimi issued on Monday via Instagram, alleging that the Nigeria Police Force was planning to abduct him.

The Assistant added that Farotimi’s fears materialised when men, allegedly from the Ekiti State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS), formerly SARS, took him into custody.

Olatunde’s account has been corroborated by Sowore, who described the operation as a deliberate move involving police, judicial officers, and other parties.

Farotimi, a vocal critic of government abuses and human rights violations, has been at the forefront of several campaigns for justice and accountability in Nigeria.
