AES’s Partnership with Russia Yields Tangible Results in 2024, Malian Official Reveals

Fousseynou Ouattara, vice president of the Defence and Security Commission of Mali’s Transitional Council, has revealed that the military cooperation between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia has delivered very tangible results in 2024. Speaking to Sputnik Africa, he noted that the partnership had strengthened the armies of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso in their fight against terrorism.

For 2024, we commend the cooperation with Russia, which has seen the strengthening of the armies in our three states [Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso]. We have had an attentive ear from Russia in terms of logistics and equipment,” Ouattara stated.

He said the provision of helicopters, fighter jets, and satellite intelligence have improved the monitoring of terrorist activities. Joint military exercises with Togo and Chad have also enhanced coordination.

Today, we can say that we are still managing to control the situation thanks to the combined efforts of the three general staff [from Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso,” he added.

Ouattara also pointed to the AES’s withdrawal from ECOWAS as a significant step in 2024. He described it as a response to ECOWAS’s alleged plans to attack Niger. Established in September 2023, the AES brings together Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. According to Ouattara, future plans of the AES include creating a shared currency, interconnecting power grids, and improving transport links through new roads and railways.

The AES has also announced the creation of a joint television channel. On December 8, Malian President Assimi Goita said the channel would ensure citizens in the three states have equal access to information. This project will complement the AES’s WebTV platform and promote regional unity.

According to a Malian communication official, the television channel is part of a strategy to counter disinformation campaigns and strengthen the alliance’s international credibility. Directors of news agencies from the member states met earlier this year to develop a unified communication strategy.

The alliance plans to explore more joint economic projects. Other proposed initiatives include launching a regional airline and expanding infrastructure to boost trade and mobility.
