Malian customs officials seized more than 100 kilogrammes of pure cocaine on Thursday in a major anti-drug operation carried out by the Mobile Intervention Brigade (BMI).

The narcotics were concealed in a hidden compartment within the chassis of a transport vehicle arriving from the West African coast. Authorities say the bust resulted from intensified intelligence efforts and heightened surveillance.

The estimated street value of the seized drugs is several billion CFA francs, according to officials. Customs authorities described the operation as a significant success in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and a boost to national security.

This seizure highlights the professionalism of our teams and reinforces the critical role Customs plays in protecting our borders, officials said in a statement.

Beyond the drug trade, authorities noted that the operation also disrupts funding sources for armed terrorist groups operating in the Sahel-Saharan region. Profits from narcotics trafficking are known to support criminal and insurgent networks in the area.

Customs officials added that preventing the flow of such substances also contributes to public health and regional stability.
