Armed Security Men Invade NLC Office Hours After Communique Condemning Killing Of Protesters

Armed security men reportedly invaded the headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) a few hours after the union issued a communique condemning the killing of peaceful protesters by government-sponsored security agents.
According to a statement signed by the NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Benson Upah, the “masked and heavily armed security operatives” believed to be operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) invaded the NLC Headquarters around 8:30 pm on Wednesday.
“They broke into the (second) floor and ransacked the bookshop (there), carting away hundreds of books and other publications. The invading troops claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGovernance protests,” the statement added.
Earlier, the NLC had issued a communique condemning the killing of peaceful protesters and calling for an investigation into the massacre. The President and the General Secretary of the NLC, Messrs Joe Aiaero and Emmanuel Ugboaja, signed the communique.
According to Amnesty International, 21 people have been killed in the ongoing protests against hunger, food inflation, and political corruption.
“Those responsible for these heinous acts must be held accountable, and justice must be served to the victims and their families. All the peaceful protesters held illegally and unconstitutionally in the Government’s gulag must be freed without delay,” the NLC demanded.
The communique further noted that the NLC had warned the federal government against anti-poor policies and “the consequences of heeding the anti-poor advice of the World Bank and IMF” by removing the fuel subsidy. However, the federal government under President Bola Tinubu failed to listen and subjected Nigerians to exacerbated economic hardships.
The NLC demanded the immediate withdrawal of the armed operatives, or else it would ask its members to stay away from work.
