The former commander of Burkina Faso’s special forces, Ahmed Kinda, has confessed to his involvement in a recent attempt to destabilise the country.

His confession was aired on Burkinabe public television RTB on Sunday.

Kinda revealed that he was arrested on August 30 at a train station in Niamey, Niger. He also mentioned that he had two accomplices with him.

In his testimony, Kinda named the former interim president of Burkina Faso, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henry Damiba, and a journalist, Abdoulaye Barry, as key sponsors of the destabilisation plot.

He also disclosed that 150 mercenaries from Central Africa had been recruited for the operation, armed with AK47 rifles, PKMS machine guns, RPG7 grenade launchers, and mortars.

According to Kinda, Barry initially provided 10 million CFA ($17,000) for the mission, later increasing it to about 80 million CFA ($136,000) due to the high risks involved.
