Congo: Militia Attack Kills Over 50, Including 9 Soldiers

More than 50 people, including nine soldiers, were killed in an attack by the Mobondo militia on a military position in Kinsele, about 100 km east of Kinshasa, the capital of Congo. This is according to a report by Mallijet on Monday.

The attack occurred on Saturday when a large group of Mobondo militiamen attacked an army position in Kinsele, Kwamouth province. The Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) eventually pushed them back.

According to Stanys Liby, the chief of the neighbouring village Kimomo, the attack resulted in over 50 deaths, including 41 militiamen, nine soldiers, and a soldier’s wife. This information was confirmed by David Bisaka, a provincial deputy of Kwamouth, who reported almost the exact figures.

Following this violence, Stanys Liby urged the Head of State to take action to restore peace.

In mid-March 2024, President Félix Tshisekedi led peace negotiations between the Teke and Yaka customary chiefs and the Mobondo militia, resulting in a ceasefire agreement.

However, the peace process’s effectiveness was questioned when Mobondo militias killed several civilians the day after the agreement.

Several Teke chiefs have since criticised the peace initiative as not inclusive or equitable enough, according to a United Nations panel of experts’ report released on July 9.
