The Federal High Court in Abuja has warned the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and his lawyers against filing any more requests for bail.
The judge, Binta Nyako, issued the warning after she denied Kanu’s fresh bail request on Monday.
The judge explained that she could not grant the IPOB leader’s bail request because he had previously jumped bail.
Kanu fled the country after he was granted bail in 2017. He was re-arrested in Kenya and forcefully returned by the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government, an action t the Court of Appeal declared illegal.
Referencing Kanu’s several unsuccessful bail requests, the judge urged him and his lawyers to explore his right of appeal rather than filing additional requests.
She warned that any more bail request from Kanu’s legal team before the court would be “a gross abuse of court process.”
In the same ruling, the court turned down Kanu’s application seeking to either be put on house arrest or transferred to a custodial centre pending the hearing and determination of his trial.
Instead, the judge ordered the Department of State Police to grant Kanu access to his legal team of five persons each visiting day and a doctor of his choice.
