The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have carried out a large-scale military operation against a terrorist group in the Sofara sector of central Mali following a deadly attack on the village of Djongue Bambara on May 23, 2025.

In a statement released by the General Staff on Saturday, the army said the terrorists were intercepted while attempting to flee across a river near Sebedaga. FAMA troops ambushed the group, killing several fighters, destroying equipment, and recovering weapons and other materials.

Military authorities said the operation was launched in response to the earlier assault on Djongue Bambara and described it as demonstrating the army’s professionalism and readiness. They commended the bravery of the soldiers involved and confirmed that search efforts were ongoing to locate any remaining attackers or accomplices in the area.

The army reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism in the Sahel, where violent attacks against civilians and state institutions have been on the rise.
