Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has granted clemency to 23 convicts, offering them a second chance at reintegration into society, this he made known during a goodwill message to the people of the state in celebration of the Independence day.
The governor also reduced the life sentences of two individuals to 15 years and reduced two death sentences to life imprisonment, along with other sentence reductions for inmates on death row.
Yahaya noted that this was following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, and expressed hope that the pardoned individuals would embrace rehabilitation.
The governor also acknowledged the economic strain caused by inflation and fuel subsidy removal.
