Lagos Govt Denies Filing Suit to Block EFCC Probe of Sanwo-Olu After Tenure

268

The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in filing a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent potential post-tenure prosecution.

It was reported that Sanwo-Olu had ‘filed’ a suit to restrain the EFCC from arresting or prosecuting him after his time as governor.

In a statement, Lawal Pedro, Lagos State’s attorney general, clarified that neither the governor nor his administration had directed any legal action against the EFCC.

Pedro noted that Governor Sanwo-Olu is not under investigation by the anti-graft agency, nor has any member of his staff been contacted by the EFCC. He added that the state government is investigating how the case could have been filed without the governor’s authorisation.

‘We need to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at no time, sued or briefed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf concerning the above subject matter, the statement reads.

Also, it is disingenuous for the Governor who enjoys immunity as conferred on him by the constitution and has almost three years ahead of him to brief any lawyer on this kind of matter..

Pedro noted that the governor “has nothing to fear” upon leaving office in May 2027. The state government also vowed to investigate the origin of the unauthorised lawsuit fully.
