Nigeria’s Opposition Leader and second runner-up in the 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi, has congratulated the United Kingdom’s Labour Party after the party’s landslide victory in Thursday’s parliamentary election.

The UK’s Centre-left Labour Party has won 412 out of 650 seats, ending the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule.

Obi, in a post on X, congratulated Sir Keri Starmer, the Labour Party leader who is expected to succeed Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister.

The former Anambra State governor hoped that the incoming government in the UK would promote democracy in Nigeria and strengthen ties between both countries.

I also hope that your government will promote stronger ties between the UK and Nigeria and help deepen our democracy, especially during the challenging times that our nation is going through.

“Nigeria is grappling with issues such as insecurity, education, healthcare, and poverty and could greatly benefit from the support of the UK. Let us work together to build a brighter future commonwealth for all. I wish you a successful tenure,” he said.
