The Nigeria Police Force has issued a second invitation to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the union’s Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja, as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of criminal intimidation, malicious damage to properties, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

The latest invitation, dated August 28, 2024, comes just a day after Ajaero honoured an earlier summons at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The letter, signed by CP Rufus Alajide on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), requests both Ajaero and Ugboaja to report for an interview at the FID Complex in Garki, Abuja, on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 11 a.m.

The letter stated, “In furtherance of investigations into the alleged case of Criminal Intimidation, Conducts Likely to Cause Breach of Public Peace and Malicious Damage to Properties in which your name featured. You are requested to come along with Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja for an interview with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID) through the undersigned.”

This new development follows Ajaero’s appearance at the Force Headquarters on Thursday morning, accompanied by prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, and other supporters.

The earlier invitation from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), included allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

After meeting with the police, Ajaero returned to the NLC headquarters, where he addressed a large crowd of NLC members gathered in solidarity. He vowed to continue his fight to implement the new minimum wage, undeterred by recent police questioning.
