The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, conveyed his heartfelt sorrow over the loss of Ondo’s Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, describing him as more than a political ally—a beloved brother and confidant. He said, “Here am I having the difficult job of singing a dirge for Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, my beloved brother, confidant, political soulmate, and the Executive Governor of Ondo State.”

Reflecting on Akeredolu’s “exemplary” leadership during challenging times, President Tinubu emphasized his dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice. He noted that Rotimi was a man who moved the nation towards equity, fairness and justice in his advocacy against every form of injustice in the country.

The President also highlighted Akeredolu’s role in advocating for a more secure nation, stating, “In a challenging moment of our statehood when marauding agents of darkness spread their tentacles across our country, Rotimi was a strong voice in the wilderness calling us to rethink our security architecture.”

He praised Governor Akeredolu’s significant contributions to Ondo State, citing the extensive infrastructural developments as evidence of his dedicated service. The President remarked, “His footprints dot the entire landscape of the state through the hundreds of kilometres of roads he built, the many schools he built, and healthcare facilities that he provided.”

Remembering Akeredolu’s leadership during a tragic incident, President Tinubu said, “During the dark hours when marauding agents of darkness visited the state and killed defenceless citizens where 40 worshippers of the Catholic Church of Owo were killed on June 5, 2022, Rotimi’s leadership qualities as a true statesman and compassionate leader radiated brightly to the world.

Tinubu also recounted their shared journey within the political sphere, celebrating Akeredolu’s commitment and bravery during numerous battles fought together. He mentioned, “We fought many battles together to restore progressive governance in the South West, Edo State, and Nigeria as a whole.”

Expressing deep grief and condolences, President Tinubu pledged to honour Akeredolu’s legacy of service to the country. He also extended personal condolences to Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, and Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Now Governor), urging them to take heart over this national tragedy.

Acknowledging the significant loss to the APC and the progressive political family, Tinubu expressed hope that Aiyedatiwa, the successor, would carry forward Akeredolu’s vision of governance.

“I hope that his successor Aiyedatiwa will hold steadfast to the vision of governance left by this towering political leader.”
