Scammers In U.S. Create Fake Website to Phish Data of AlatByWEMA Customers

A fraudulent website, Alatbywema.com, has been created to scam users of AlatByWema, a digital banking platform by Wema Bank. As reported by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ),the fake site mimics the actual AlatByWema website to steal sensitive information from users.

The bogus site was reportedly created on July 30 by someone in the United States who sent deceptive text messages claiming a strange phone number had been added to the user’s profile. The messages prompt users to log into the fake website to remove the number if they didn’t authorise the change.

The genuine ID Wema uses for its ALAT customers

The phishing attempt uses “ALATbyWema” as the sender ID, slightly different from the genuine “ALATbyWEMA.” The official website of AlatByWema is online.alat.ng. In contrast, the fake one is alatbywema.com. Another difference is that the imposter site lacks the Central Bank of Nigeria’s licensing displayed on the authentic site.

The fake website can verify real Wema Bank account numbers, allowing only legitimate accounts to proceed to enter sensitive details. FIJ contacted AlatByWema, and a representative confirmed that their official website remains online.alat.ng.
