Senegal’s fifth and youngest President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has shown the beauty of frugality in the recent marking of the Senegalese 64th Independent anniversary held on Thursday, 4th April 2024.

Following the inauguration ceremony, President Faye, in a cost-efficient customary ceremony, conducted the shortest anniversary at the Palais de la Republique, saving the country millions of CFA Franc.

Before the ceremony, Faye had announced to indulge in a non-elaborative procession, unlike the traditional method practised by his predecessor, Macky Sall.

Ousmane Sanko, who spearheaded Senegal’s anti-establishment movement, was appointed by Faye as Prime Minister on Friday, stating the government’s priorities would focus on youth employment, most of whom supported their emergence.

Faye also ensured lowering the cost of living and protecting human rights remains a necessity.

According to the ANSD report, the unemployment rate in Senegal decreased to 18.60 per cent in the second quarter of 2023 from 21.50 per cent in the first quarter of 2023.

Meanwhile, Faye has expressed to tackle the unemployment rate in Senegal, which averaged 17.67 per cent from 1994 until 2023, reaching an all-time high of 26.10 per cent in the second quarter of 2020 and a record low of 5.60 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2002.
