Tems Cancels Kigali Concert Over Rwanda-Congo Conflict

444

Nigerian singer Tems has cancelled her scheduled concert in Kigali, Rwanda, due to ongoing tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The show, part of her Born in the Wild world tour, was set to take place on March 22, 2025.

The Grammy-winning artist announced the cancellation on X (formerly Twitter), stating she was unaware of the conflict when initially promoted the event. She apologised for any unintended insensitivity and expressed hope for peace in the region.

So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realising that there is ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo. I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way. I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected. Conflict is no joke and I truly hope and pray for peace in this time.

Tems has been touring globally in support of her debut album, Born in the Wild, performing in cities across Europe, North America, and Australia.

The conflict between Rwanda and the DRC is rooted in long-standing political, ethnic, and territorial disputes. Tensions have escalated in recent years, with Rwanda accused of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has been active in eastern Congo and spearheading the crisis ongoing in the city. Rwanda denies these allegations, but the situation has led to regional instability, bodies piling up in the streets, and mass displacement.
