UNN Tops Nigerian Universities in Scholarly Publications

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has secured a leading position among Nigerian tertiary institutions. This is based on the Scopus 2024 rankings for the most scholarly output in higher education institutes.
As of January 7, 2024, UNN had amassed a total of 7025 publications from 5813 authors, making it the top-ranked university in the country in terms of academic output.
Following UNN, the University of Ibadan (UI) secured second place with 6978 publications by 4732 authors, while the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) ranked third with 3714 publications by 2739 authors.
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) stood fourth and fifth, respectively, with Covenant University being the only private institution in the top six. Covenant University recorded 3432 publications from 2303 authors.
Despite UNN’s lead in publication count, UI outperformed in citation numbers, attracting 68,318 citations compared to UNN’s 44,741. UNILORIN, on the other hand, showed the highest growth rate among the top three institutions, with a 25.5% increase in publications.
