Professor Abubakar Siddique, Director of the Centre for Democratic Development, Research, and Training in Zaria, has claimed ongoing efforts to establish U.S. and French military bases in Nigeria.

Drawing from decades of research experience, Siddique expressed concern over what he perceives as secretive manoeuvres of foreign powers.

Speaking to journalists in an interview on AriseTV, Siddique emphasised the depth of research backing his assertions. He lamented the lack of  awareness among government officials, particularly the Information Minister, about activities transpiring “behind the scenes.”

According to Siddique, his team meticulously examined correspondence, including letters in French, indicating concrete plans for military installations in Nigeria.

Siddique underscored the historical context of such endeavours, referencing previous attempts during President Obasanjo’s tenure to host the headquarters of AFRICOM in Nigeria.

He recounted how diplomatic pressure and public outcry thwarted these efforts, citing opposition from diplomats and student protests in the 60s against British-imposed military bases.

The revelation has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians, with many questioning the implications for national sovereignty and regional stability.

They argue that hosting foreign military bases could undermine Nigeria’s autonomy and exacerbate security challenges.
