A road accident in Kaduna State’s Lere Local Government Area has claimed the lives of 15 children, leaving 48 others injured.

The incident occurred around 1 pm on Sunday when a J5 bus, transporting 63 children to celebrate the Muslim festival Eld El Maulud, lost control and collided with an oncoming articulated vehicle.

According to Kabiru Nadabo, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kaduna State, the accident was caused by the driver of the J5 bus speeding excessively. “The driver lost control due to overspeeding, leading to a tragic collision,” Nadabo confirmed.

The impact resulted in the immediate deaths of 15 children, while the remaining 48 sustained injuries of varying degree. Emergency responders, including the FRSC, police, and officials from the Kaduna State Traffic Laws Enforcement Authority (KASTLEA), rushed the injured to the Comprehensive Hospital in Saminaka. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at Dabo Lere Memorial Hospital.

In the wake of the incident, Nadabo reiterated the importance of road safety, especially during festive periods when road traffic tends to increase. He added that the FRSC has since launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
